Controls on unlock screen missing on Android 4.4 (KitKat)

    Hi all,

Since moving to my new Nexus 5, I don't get any controls anymore on the unlock screen anymore. This happens both with the official release and the latest Beta (3.1.50).

Is this a known issue? Is there a setting somewhere I need to toggle that I'm not aware of? This worked fine on my Nexus 4 and I moved BeyondPod settings over with a manual restore of my backed up options.

I was searching around the forum, but couldn't find anything.

From what I've heard, you have to explicitly enable Lock Screen Widgets on KitKat.

Here's the first article I found on how to enable it when I googled Lock Screen Widget KitKat.

juwiz: I have Lock Screen Widgets enabled and they are working fine (including the BeyondPod widget). I'm talking about the controls that used to show on the 1st homescreen when BeyondPod is playing (so not a widget I would set manually).

Could you please clarify? Are you talking about a BeyondPod widget on a home screen like one of these:

    ... or the Player screen:

... or on the Playlist screen in BeyondPod?

(NB: Depending on your settings, you may also have a fourth skip to end button on all of these).

None of the above. On Android 4.2 and 4.3, you would get a play/pause, forward and backward key with the cover art in the backround in the top quarter of the lock screen. Unfortunately I have wiped & given away my Nexus 4 already, but having a quick search around Google images, this is pretty much what I had in both 4.2 and 4.3:

If I'm not mistaken, they are standard Android controls. In 4.4 with Google Music, they are now fullscreen.

Yes, those are the standard Android lock screen transport controls. BeyondPod doesn't control whether they exist or not. In 4.2 and 4.3, Android would display them if it detected that any audio application was playing something when the screen locked. I don't know whether this has changed in 4.4, but it seems this is probably an Android issue. Certainly changes have been made to support the new seeking functionality on the lock screen.

As far as BeyondPod (or any other app) is concerned, the buttons on the lock screen pass instructions (or at least they did, when they existed) to the current A/V app in the same way as buttons on a headset.

Just out of curiosity, have you enabled ART in the Developer options? I'm just wondering whether this might be one of those things that it's not compatible with.

By googling kitkat transport controls lock screen, I found some articles that mentioned "supported apps" (e.g. http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/11...ivate-seeking/ and http://www.forbes.com/sites/amitchow...tkat-features/), so maybe the transport controls are only available for certain apps now? Possibly only those that support Chromecast? (BP does have a CC beta test version, but it requires that each dongle has to be whitelisted by serial number, and until Google opens up the ChromeCast SDK, it can't be released to the Play store.)

I enabled Developer Options in 4.4 but can't find 'ART'. Are you referring to something specific to BP?

It's nothing to do with BP. It's the new Android Run Time (which will eventually replace Dalvik). It's available in the developer options to allow developers to test their apps to see if they work with it (so that both apps and ART itself can be fixed, as appropriate). Many apps run fine, but some are completely broken by it (I hear the current version of WhatsApp, for instance, simply won't run at all).

It's that your only phone, I'd recommend not enabling it unless you don't mind some serious tinkering and/or factory resets to deal with any issues you might find.

It's my main phone and I really don't want to tinker with it Thanks for all your help and feedback. I really hope this will work again in the future. I use that feature all the time!

I have the official KitKat 4.4 and have side loaded the nexus 5 launcher on my Nexus 4 and I still get the lock screen transport controls as on 4.3.
