What does the Feed Processing Details section say about it when it doesn't work?

For me (which does work) it says
    Best of Today
New Podcasts: 2, Download Max: 2, Keep Max: 4
    http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/today/today_20130711-0708a.mp3 (queued for download)
    http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4/today/today_20130710-1027a.mp3 (queued for download)

It may be that something's gone awry in the feed. Have you tried unsubscribing and resubscribing again?

    Processed Feed is Empty!

I just set this up on a new phone and I had the same problem on my prior phone.

That log entry shows that BeyondPod didn't find any new entries in the feed. Is it possible that the feed isn't being updated until after your scheduled update had occurred?

There are hundreds of unread podcasts but no new ones. Could this be part of it?

It'll be all of it. It's working as designed.

You've asked BP to download the 5 most recent episodes, but you've already read those, so it won't download any more until there's something newer than what you've already read.

You could either increase the number of episodes (a lot) to get far enough back to pick up some new ones - the number you pick will need to be large enough to include the unread ones counting backwards, or you could "Download in order" to start from the oldest in the feed - but that won't download any new ones until you've read the old ones.

Or you could just download the older unread ones manually, as and when you want them.

So new and unread are different. I guess that makes sense but it would be nice to have it not just pick up new but also unread. Feature suggestion perhaps.

    Thank you.

In the majority of cases, you either want to start from the beginning (e.g. for course material or serialised audio books), in which case you'd use Download in Order, or you want to join in from now and move fowards.

If you're not interested in getting new episodes straight away, you could switch to Download in Order until you've caught up. Or you could just download all the unread ones as a one-off exercise and have done with it (asusming you have enough storage space, of course).

What you're really requesting is to download unread, most recent first (i.e. anything new, plus anything unread in the feed, working backwards through the feed). Anything is possible of course, if enough people are interested, but it's a fairly unusual use pattern.

In the meantime, you might like to try Download in Order.
